Dolphins on our Doorstep is offered as a FREE incursion for middle years high school students in years 7-10. The program takes a deeper dive into the Dolphin Watch citizen science project, the importance of monitoring our local indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins, and why dolphin health and that of our estuarine and river ecosystems are closely intertwined.
Students learn about dolphin biology, anatomy, and evolutionary adaptations which allow them to thrive in their aquatic environment before some practice at identifying some of our current Derbal Yirrigan Djarlgarro / Swan Canning river dolphin residents. After unpacking the Dolphin Watch citizen science project and its importance in conservation and community engagement, the focus changes to healthy aquatic ecosystems and the opportunity to win a prize or two! Students look at the threats dolphins face living in a heavily urbanised environment, including water quality issues, river monitoring, and mitigation strategies.
Students learn practical ways they can help protect local dolphins and the habitat which sustains them. The program consists of an interactive presentation with hands on activities. The class gets a copy of the FinBook Guide to keep too!
