If you accidentally get a bird entangled in your fishing line, please don’t cut the line. Please follow these simple 3 steps:
- Slowly reel in the entangled bird.
- Anything bigger than a seagull should be handled with two people working together. Throw a towel (or a jumper/tee-shirt if you don’t have a towel) over the seabird. With one hand carefully identify the head and beak through the towel and use one hand to keep this under control. Use the other hand to gently fold the towel around the wings and body and pick it up, keeping it low at waist height.
- Call WA Seabird Rescue on 6102 8464 – they have an army of trained volunteers all over the state and they’ll be able to send someone to your location to help disentangle the bird and assess it for any injuries
If you’re not comfortable doing the first two steps, please just call WA Seabird Rescue on (08)61028464 and they’ll send out a trained volunteer.
If you’d like to know more about how you can safely disentangle the bird yourself, please watch this short video which explains what you should do.
