Response to entangled dolphin calf

Staff from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions attempted an intervention of the entangled dolphin calf.

Recently, we joined DBCA operational staff and researchers on the Swan River on their second attempt to locate Dunedoo’s calf, who is entangled in fishing line. We managed to locate the calf as part of a larger group of resident dolphins and observed their behaviour. The dolphins were very active, socialising and foraging during this time. An opportunity arose, where the operational team were able to deploy a specially designed net in an attempt to capture the calf and attempt to disentangle it, however this was unsuccessful. While the attempt to intervene was unsuccessful, valuable information was gained. The calf is moving quickly with less rest than previously observed and was socialising with other dolphins. The body condition still appears normal despite the entanglement still being present. We also confirmed that Dunedoo and her calf are still spending considerable time with Claw and her calf Smiley, who is the same age as Dunedoo’s calf. This association will assist in locating them in the future. DBCA and researchers will continue to monitor Dunedoo and her calf and attempt to intervene if the opportunity arises.
