SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Every Spring-Summer\, approximately 37 species of shorebirds migrate to Australia to escape the freezing conditions in their northern hemisphere. They visit Australia’s coastal and freshwater wetlands to rest and feed\, enabling them to build the energy reserves they need to travel the long distance back to their breeding grounds around April. Some of these incredible birds are listed as ‘Critically Endangered\,’ so we must do eveything we can to help protect them during their stopover in Perth! You can find out more about these amazing birds (and even see a few if you’re lucky) by coming along to our World Migratory Bird Day event. \nThere will be lots of activities including: \nBirdwatching walks led by experienced birders at 8.30am and 9am. The 9am walk will have an emphasis on bird photography including ethics of bird photography. Participation in the walks will be on a first come\, first served basis. Both walks will accommodate 15 participants. \nEducational stalls by River Guardians\, Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary\, Birdlife and SERAG (Swan Estuary Reserves Action Group) \nActivities for kids – colouring in\, craft\, and a scavenger hunt \nPrizes to be won \nLight refreshments will be provided by City of Melville. \nThis event is a collaboration between Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary\, River Guardians\, the City of Melville\, Birdlife and SERAG (Swan Estuary Reserves Action Group) \nThis is a FREE event\, but please register your interest here. \nFor inquires please contact community@dbca.wa.gov.au \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious ImageNext Image

SUMMARY:Clean Up on a SUP
DESCRIPTION:Clean Up on a SUP\, with River Guardians and SUP Tonic Australia \nThe Swan river is a precious place\, sustaining a huge diversity of wildlife. Sadly\, many of our iconic species such as waterbirds and dolphins are regularly entangled in rubbish and fishing line that is left behind. Once an animal is entangled\, it can be very difficult to rescue them\, so we are hosting a clean-up event to help remove rubbish from the river\, and prevent it entering in the first place. River Guardians are teaming up with SUP Tonic Australia to clean up the Swan River and Sandy Beach Reserve\, Bassendean on Friday 4th October\, from 9am-11am. Please join us too\, everyone is welcome! Bring the kids\, grandkids and even your dogs (on a leash of course!). You can hire a stand up paddleboard\, or bring your own to help us clean up the fishing line stuck along the river’s edge\, or stay on land to clean up the foreshore reserve. This is a FREE event\, but board hire is $20 per board. If you would like to hire a board\, please click here \nWe will meet at Sandy Beach Reserve (end of West Road\, Bassendean) opposite the playground. Please Look for the River Guardians and SUP Tonic flags. We will begin the safety briefing and clean up at 9.10am but please join us at any time between 9-11am. Light refreshments will be provided at 11.am. \nWhat to wear/bring:\nWe will supply sunscreen\, insect repellant\, hand sanitiser\, gloves\, rubbish pickers and bags. Please feel free to bring your own gloves and sunscreen. Please dress according to the weather conditions. For the land-based clean up\, closed in shoes and long pants are recommended. If on a SUP\, please bring a towel and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet as well as reef shoes (optional).\nPrevious ImageNext Image

SUMMARY:World Rivers Day- Meet the Scientists
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered just how salty the water in the Swan Canning Riverpark is\, how many dolphins inhabit its waters\, or why some birds travel hundreds of kilometres to visit the Riverpark every year? Then come and celebrate this year’s World Rivers Day at Point Walter\, by connecting with local scientists to learn about the research\, monitoring and conservation efforts occurring in our very own Swan Canning Riverpark. Through interactive sessions with scientists from the Department of Biodiversity\, Conservation and Attractions\, Murdoch University\, BirdLife and the WA Fairy Tern Network\, participants will gain insight into three different fields of work related to the Riverpark. Participants will rotate through the interactive sessions\, then finish the day with lunch and an opportunity to ask the scientists any burning questions. \nThis event is a great opportunity for those who have an interest in the environment and a curiosity for science\, and would be well suited to people aged 16+. Children under 16 years of age are welcome to attend\, however the content and activities are not considered suitable for children under 12 years of age.
