Autumn River Festival

The up and coming Autumn River Festival on 28 March 2010 is an opportunity to get down to Riverside Gardens in Bayswater and enjoy a family-orientated festival on the shores of our beautiful Swan River. We’ll be announcing the winner of our photo competition and also have a display of the top thirty photographs in the Swan River Trust marquee. To enter the competition, make sure you get your photos in by 12 March 2010.

Dolphin Watch

We’ve also been busy working on our Dolphin Watch project for 2010. The number of dolphin deaths last year highlighted the need for everyone to remember to play their part and help keep the rivers healthy. If you’d like to become a Dolphin Watch volunteer, email River Guardians and we’ll tell you when the next training session is.

River Guardians celebrate second birthday
Two years running and the Swan River Trust’s River Guardians program now boasts 780 members and a host of successful events held including planting days, frog finding workshops and indigenous cultural events.

Perhaps more successful has been the increased profile of the River Guardians’ mascot Jon the Swan who features on the Trust Facebook and Twitter sites, and at many events.

Highlights of the past two years include the launch of the popular Dolphin Watch project, which trains members to monitor the Swan Canning Riverpark’s dolphin population.

River Guardians Program Manager Marnie Giroud said it had been an exciting two years.

“It has been awesome to see how much Perth people love their rivers and our mascot Jon the Swan,” she said.

“River Guardians are our eyes on the rivers and we aim to share the message that everyone can do their bit to help keep our rivers healthy.

“The Dolphin Watch project in particular has blown me away; the interest and passion people have for these iconic creatures is incredible with more than 100 trained Dolphin Watchers feeding into research by Murdoch and Curtin universities.”

Actively engaging the Perth community to protect the Swan Canning Riverpark was the philosophy behind the River Guardians program when it launched in June 2008.

Jon the SwanMembership stood at 75 Honorary River Guardians and expectations were high, with the program the first of its kind in Western Australia. The River Guardians program gives members access to free, fun river events as well opportunities to network with others and volunteer in river restoration and training activities.

Dolphin watchers celebrate anniversary
Dolphin watchers from around the Swan Canning Riverpark celebrated the inaugural Dolphin Watch Day on Wednesday 12 May 2010 marking the one year anniversary of the River Guardians Dolphin Watch project.

New research based on the observations of Dolphin Watch volunteers found that at least seven Swan River dolphins - including mothers and calves - travelled as far upstream as Caversham in the Swan Valley.

The culmination of the day was the announcement of Madeline Kirkham, of Victoria Park, as the outstanding dolphin watcher of 2010.

Update on the Red Bull plane crash in the Swan River
The Swan River Trust were notified by WA Police of the Red Bull plane crashing in the Swan River yesterday.

River Guardians were at the ready to deal with any pollution arising on advice from WA Police.

However, the wreckage was removed by the Red Bull event organizers and there was no fuel spillage to the Swan River from the aircraft

Fuel on these planes is very “light” and advice is that it evaporates very quickly, so containment/absorption is not likely to be feasible.
