Nicholas Barwell sent in a Haiku – a specialised Japanese poem. Nicholas is a retired ancient mariner living in Applecross. He loves cooking stir-fries for his family and plays jazz piano. He loves writing letters and talks to excess on the phone. He plays backgammon and reads Alan Watts forever.
Nicholas has had haiku published in the First and Second Australian Anthology of Australian Haiku, 2000, 2003 respectively.
widening circles
a berry drops
in silent waters
low tide
seabirds rest
beneath the casuarinas
beyond the bridge
a glimpse
of sparkling water
riverbank
walking with breadcrumbs
ducks following
suddenly this Sunday
afternoon
a burst of kookaburra song
tall poplars
reflections
in the water
autumn wind
blows the café door open
pea soup steaming
sweet surprise
magpies’ song
at midnight
summer storm
a clatter of raindrops
on fallen leaves
